Teresa Howard

Playwright and Lyricist

Teresa is a member of the BML Workshop, MMD and the Writer’s Guild of GB and has a BA Hons in Performing Arts. She received a Fellowship as Resident Writer for Winchester School of Art, taught play writing at the Holborn Centre for Performing Arts and has also worked for the literary department of the Royal Court Theatre. She has lectured on writing at University College Oxford, and been critic and presenter for BBC World Service.

Her most recent project is a musical adaptation of I CAPTURE THE CASTLE, based on the novel by Dodie Smith (author of 101 Dalmatians). She is the librettist and lyricist, working in collaboration with composer Steven Edis, who has composed and orchestrated shows for a raft of West End and regional theatre productions. I CAPTURE THE CASTLE had a workshop at the Royal Academy of Music in January 2010, followed by a workshop and concert reading for producers at the RAM in July 2010, directed by course leader, Karen Rabinowitz. The opening number from this show was short-listed for the Sondheim Award in 2011 and Only Men for the Richard Stilgoe Masterclass at MMD in 2011.

Her previous musical collaboration with Steven Edis was a musical play based on the love affair between Jane Burden (wife of the Arts and Crafts designer William Morris) and Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, called POSSESSED. While at the National Theatre, Clive Paget was her mentor on this musical and received a Writers’ Guild Encouragement Award for nurturing the project. He directed a showcase of POSSESSED at Greenwich Theatre on 2006 with Peter Polycarpou and Anna Francolini in the lead roles. It went on to have a Showcase at the Arts Theatre, London and performance at Oxford Playhouse in 2008, with Anna Francolini, Matthew White, and Joseph Millson in the lead roles.

Many of the songs from POSSESSED have been sung as part of festivals and cabaret performances: Hungry Sea, was chosen for a cabaret of International new musical songs at the Kings Head Theatre, and Raft of Delight sung in cabaret by Josie Lawrence at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2011. Hold Still was short-listed for the Stephen Sondheim Award in 2010 and three songs from the show were short-listed for the UK Song Contest in 2008. More Than Life Itself, was chosen for performance as part of the Clearspace Festival of new musical songs in the USA in 2008.

Teresa’s stage plays include: BADER AND DOOLITTLE (Commissioned by JABOD Productions); GROCK (Chichester Festival Theatre, with Derek Royle); STONEFIST (Soho Theatre directed by Brigid Larmour); REV. LUKE’S USEFUL SHOW (Old Fire Station Oxford) and MUSIC ON THE METRO (Winchester). Many of these stage plays include incidental songs, with her own lyrics. Teresa also created and wrote a TV series called PROTECTORS, commissioned by Talisman Films, was a researcher on PAINE for Peter Law at Red Door. Her children’s audio book, THE LONELY MONSTER, with songs by Olivier Caldwell, was produced by HD Productions. She also writes articles for magazines and journals including The Spectator and Blackwell’s - The Art Book
